Train Derails At West Bengal’s Maynaguri; Government Provides Emergency Assistance

A terrible accident occurred this evening when 12 coaches of the Bikaner-Guwahati express got derailed and overturned. The incident took place in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district. Search and rescue operations are underway as three people have already been pronounced dead.

As many as 15 people who have sustained major injuries are being transported to Jalpaiguri for emergency treatment. A total of 51 ambulances are present at the spot to transport more people. District Magistrate of Jalpaiguri, Moumita Godala Basu said, “At least three people have been killed and over 20 people injured.”

In order to facilitate the rescue operation in Maynaguri train accident, following help (in terms of police personnel and rescue materials) have been sent from Coochbehar district:

1. A team of around 20 police persons under the guidance of Add. SP Mathabhanga has already left for Maynaguri.

2. Four ambulances from Police side already on the way.

3. Ropes, dragon lights and other rescue materials have also been sent from Coochbehar police side.

4. OC Mekhliganj is on the way to accident spot with 500 food packets and water bottles.

Sources said that about 250 passengers have been rescued so far. Railway authorities said that a total of 700 people were on board the train at the time of the accident. The train was travelling at a speed of 40 kmph. Video footage showed emergency workers and police personnel using gas cutters in order to rescue the trapped passengers.

Meanwhile, nurses and health workers are being brought in from North Bengal to give first aid to the injured.

West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee posted a tweet after learning of the accident. In it, she wrote, “Deeply concerned to hear about the tragic accident of the Bikaner-Guwahati Express in Maynaguri. Senior Officers of the State Government, DM/SP/IG North Bengal are supervising rescue and relief operations. Those injured will receive medical attention, as early as possible.”

BJP’s Dilip Ghosh also posted a tweet that read, “Really distressed on hearing about the tragic passenger train (Bikaner-Guwahati Express) derailment at Maynaguri’s Domhiniti. Our local Party workers are on the ground providing relief to the passengers. I am thankful to those workers and pray that all passengers are safe.”
